Temporary anchorage devices, commonly called TADs, are tiny titanium anchors used in specific orthodontic treatments. They help move teeth faster and more comfortably. TADs can be used alongside braces or as a less bulky alternative to traditional headgear.
Book OnlineHow are TADs placed?
We begin by numbing the gum and jaw area where the TAD will go with a strong anesthetic. Then, your trusted orthodontist will gently insert the TAD through the gum and firmly into the jawbone. The procedure is quick and usually over before you notice. You might feel slight pressure during placement, but within a day, the TAD should feel completely natural. Once your treatment is finished or the TAD is no longer needed, it will be removed comfortably in just a few minutes.
What can I do to relieve discomfort caused by my TAD?
If you experience any soreness after placement, taking Tylenol® can help ease the discomfort. Many patients tell us that any pain usually subsides quickly. However, if you still feel pain several days later, please contact Align Orthodontics Lexington at (781) 860-7997 right away.
How can I keep my TAD clean?
Cleaning a TAD is similar to caring for braces: brush your teeth thoroughly at least three times daily. We also provide a special antimicrobial mouthwash to use twice a day to keep the area healthy and free from infection.
If you have questions about TADs or your orthodontic journey, don’t hesitate to contact our caring team at Align Orthodontics Lexington in Lexington, MA. We’re here to guide you every step of the way.
